Lindsay current situation:

Hey there! My name is Lindsay Miernicke and I am 22 years old. Born and raised on the same street here in Windsor, Ontario.

This June I just graduated from the University of Windsor’s Honors Human Kinetics Program, specializing in Sports Business, and in the near future I will be returning to University to obtain my Master’s in Public and Media Relations.  I have grown up around developing technology my entire life beginning with my dad owning a computer store for 16 years, to my obsession with video games (both console and PC).

I heard about this position from my University public speaking professor, and have been trying to decide on some ideas since it started! I decided to go with a Student Survivor theme for my video, parodying CBS’ survivor as a way of differentiating myself from the rest of the applicants and expressing my fun and creative  personality.

In the process of this application I applied my HTML coding knowledge, and learned some basic CSS coding to develop a blog site dedicated to my application! Feel free to check it out, and thank you for taking the time to see what I have to bring to the table.

Lindsay's blog post:

Summer is a great example of a freedom we feel at our age. Freedom from school and stresses. It can also be a time to apply what you have learned in school by finding jobs you can excel at to save for rent, paying back loans, or even that trip to Europe next summer. Regardless of what we are saving and planning for in each of our futures, we all want to experience this warm, sunny freedom that won't last forever.

I'm really excited to write this blog this week on one of my favourite topics to share with people: affordable dates and day trips.

Some of the following ideas may sound familiar or common, but most of the time are overlooked and not considered. They are also some of my favourite summer scenes…

  1. Day Trip- The African Lion Safari
Yes, we have all passed it on our way somewhere. Why not stop in Cambridge and check out this WILD adventure, and if Cambridge is too far...go to the zoo!
  2. Date Night- The Drive-In Movie Theater
People are always surprised when I tell them there is a drive-in literally 15 minutes from here in Windsor (Detroit’s Ford Drive-In is one of the largest in the world, with 12 screens!!) But not only is there one close to us here in Windsor, but off-hand I know of one in London, Newmarket and Grand Bend. I’m sure there is one within a short drive wherever you live in Ontario, just call upon our best friend Google.
  3. Day Trip- Wine Tasting (19+)
Look up some local wineries or even one in a nearby city. Pick up some friends, and check it out. Most wineries are open 7 days a week, but it may be a good idea to call and check in advance because some wineries host weddings. (Maybe #4 should be wedding crashing?!)
  4. Date Night- Park/Fountain Picnic
Make the picnic your own. Bring candy, sandwiches or even a Hot and Ready from Little Caesars!! Find a fountain, dock or new location to take your date.
    Suggestions:
-If you are legal to drink Fuzion wine is under $10 and tastes like it isn’t (perfect for us starving students).
-Cherries, grapes and blueberries are in season (cheaper).
    - Bake cookies to impress your date with your amazing Martha Stewart-like skills.
  5. Group Night- Dare/Scavenger Night
This is a summer classic with my friends. Someone makes a list of things to find, pictures to take, or dares to accomplish within a given period of time. Break off into teams (each team to a car), and race to find/do more things then the other team. Points can also be added to each item/picture/dare, depending on the amount of time or difficulty of the task.
  6. Date Night- Beach Bon Fire
This one is pretty self-explanatory, but it is important to note if the beach you are headed to has strict rules against bon fires! (Made this mistake once…)
  7. Day Activity-  Cards
Look up some new card games like Wizard (decks are sold at places like Walmart), which is similar to Euchre, or Baseball Poker. Cribbage is a great game as well! YouTube can help you with the rules!
  8. Date Night- Cake Boss
Watch an episode of any of those popular cake shows for inspiration. Then pick up a box of already made fondant, cake mix and food colouring and go to town. The Bulk Barn has reasonably priced already made fondant…incase you have difficulty finding some.

So there it is! A good start I’d say for the summer. And this way these activities will save money and spice up your day/night, as opposed to the regular board games and blockbuster nights.
