Chelsea current situation:

Hey guys!

I’m Chelsea! I’m a 19-year-old from Point Edward, entering my third year of university. I am currently studying political science; with plans to one day attend law school. I am lucky enough to have two jobs this summer, one in the pharmacy at Rexall Drug Store, and one independently working with a child who is blind and deaf. In the fall, I am hoping to have the honour to work with Libro Financial Group and United Communities Credit Union as Ontario’s Young and Free spokesperson!

Chelsea's blog post:

As young adults, this time in our life we are faced with many different decisions, some of which will shape our future. I am sure I am not alone in the idea that I still feel a little uncertain at this point. We are now at (or approaching) the age of school, careers, families, and of course; responsibility. With the freedom we are given at this time, it can feel both liberating and restricting. We are trying to make a name for ourselves, yet, we still may need to rely heavily on other people to get us started (whether it’s family, loans, multiple jobs, etc). Sometimes I feel with all this “growing up,” I am constantly trying to prove myself along the way. This can be hard on your own. I am amazed at what these financial groups are doing; giving us the power to voice our own opinions and concerns!  With currently paying for school myself, I am no stranger to loans and debt. I am always looking to find new ways to save money, and learn more about the options for the future. I would love to be able to learn from the experts at Libro Financial and United Communities Credit Union, and to in turn, share with you what I have learned (maybe with a few fashion, gossip, and current event tips thrown in). When we become more educated in this type of planning, and learn how to take care of these things right now, we can more comfortably experience the FREEDOM and FUN that everybody wants in life. Freedom at this point should be to show who you are, and to start doing things you love! We are the future, and with a few tips, some great planning, and of course fun along the way, together we can make this the best time of our lives; keeping us always young and free!

To get us started, I thought I would share some fun, budget friendly ideas for hanging out with your friends...

  1. Have a clothing swap: sure, some of the clothes hanging in your closet might be “so last season to you,” but to a friend it might be just what she needs in her wardrobe. Plan a day where you each bring 3 pieces of clothing that you no longer want (please, no rips or tears), and have fun trying them on and swapping them to add to your personal collection!
  2. Create masterpieces together: ok, maybe you won’t be the next Picasso, but your walls will certainly benefit from this fun time. Get together a bunch of your old magazines (no, you don’t need to keep those forever), and get your friends to do the same. Buy some cheap canvasses (as cheap as $2), and make collages! Add some sparkle, paint and glue... and TA DA a masterpiece!

And for the boys...

  1. Plan a competition: there’s nothing guys bond better over than a good game. Plan a game of pick-up football in your local park. Make some teams (shirts and skins preferably if you want some attentive cheerleaders), and play best two out of three. The prize can be fun too; the losing team has to perform an embarrassing task planned by the winners (streaking anyone?).
  2. For the more artsy type, why not plan a coffee night? Get together your friends (in someone’s garage, house, or a park); bring your talents to the table! Each person can show off their skills with song, guitar, stories, drama, etc. Invite along people to enjoy the show with you. You can even charge a dollar each to get in, and use the money to get some coffee and snacks, from Tim Horton’s of course.
