Kaylie's current situation:

Hey everyone, thanks for checking out my video! Sixty seconds isn't a lot of time, so here's a little more to help you get to know me.

-- I'm a third year University of Windsor Communications, Media & Film major. Through the school year I work as a waitress at Colasanti Tropical Gardens, and during the summer I work at the Kingsville Golf & Country Club.

-- I'm a big sis to two younger brothers and I also have an extremely large extended family. I love meeting new people and and I'm very easy to get along with-- a great combo for your representative!

-- I'm proud to be involved with a few causes-- mainly raising money for Breast Cancer Awareness and supporting animal rights with PETA2.

-- Being 22, I am relatable to the majority of the 25-and-under crowd, as I am in the same situation that most early 20-year-olds are in, while still remembering my years as a teenager like they were yesterday.

-- I don't already have a blog or collection of videos to refer you to, but that means I have all the more stored up to talk with you about in the coming year!

-- I'm a music loving, concert going, road tripping, movie quoting, baseball playing, money saving machine! haha I hope you can envision me as your Young & Free Ontario Spokesperson for 2011.

BEAT THOSE SUMMER SCHOOL BLUES

It’s that time of year again—the weather is getting warmer, the sun is shining brighter, and what we’ve been waiting all winter for is finally within reach. While summer has begun for some, for many others this is not the case. High School students have over another month to go until warm freedom, and many other students are enrolled in dreaded summer session classes.

I know I don’t speak only for myself when I say that it is much easier to get in the study ‘groove’ in the wintertime when there are below freezing temperatures outside. It seems so cruel to keep our vitamin D deprived selves indoors studying while the sunshine seems to be calling us outward. This is why now more than ever, students should be reminded of some common, and not so common study tips. I’ve listed a few below to help get you through those summertime school blues.

GET OUTSIDE
Provided your neighbours aren’t out mowing their lawns or having poolside parties that will surely disrupt you, it is a great idea to pack up the books and some snacks and head outside to do your studying. There’s something about studying with shades on that makes it cooler! Enjoy the natural light and heat but be sure to drink up to stay hydrated as well. Also, when attending classes, go outside to eat your lunch! This doesn’t mean waste your money by eating out, but simply bring your lunch outside to eat to break up the day and make for something to look forward to through the morning classes.

STUDY WITH FRIENDS
Get a friend or group of friends together to go over notes, fill in each others’ blanks and make for an overall more enjoyable studying session. Even those who classify themselves lone studiers only, it is helpful to switch up your studying and you may find that your study partners may be able to help you with things you don’t already know.

MAKE A SCHEDULE
And stick to it! Preparing an outline of study blocks, breaks, etc. A block of uninterrupted studying followed by a deserved break will typically display better results than unscheduled, here-and-there studying.

DITCH THE ELECTRONICS
Print up your notes or summarize and handwrite what’s saved on your computer and turn it off while you’re studying! The same should go for your cell phone, as it will only distract you from your work. This will avoid temptation to ‘check’ your facebook, most often stretching to a 2 hour creep session. An uninterrupted block of studying is the best way to retain the information. I know many of you (like me!) enjoy listening to music while you study, it can help block out noises and allow full focus on studying. However, it is best if the music is instrumental or more mellow, you don’t want to be unconsciously thinking of lyrics rather than your books.

PROCRASTINATION IS THE ENEMY
Arguably the hardest thing to kick when it comes to school is not putting things off. “I’ll do it later.” We’ve all said it, we’ve all done it, and it has surely gotten us into trouble. Force yourself to be proactive, when studying, writing a paper, or otherwise. Procrastination always leads to bad things, no matter what the situation.

USE ACRONYMS
This is an old trick, but it can pull you out of a sticky spot during a test or exam. Especially helpful with lists or steps, develop a word from the letters in the list to help remember the rest on test day! Some teachers provide acronyms for various lessons, but you’re much more likely to remember when you develop your own acronyms instead. Give it a try!

There you have it, kids! Of course there are many more study hints to be found, but these are the ones that have worked best for me. They’re not all for everyone, but surely there are a few on this list to help you out.

Try not to get yourself down about having to do work while the sunshine and smell of fresh cut grass is all around you—it’s not impossible to enjoy both at the same time!
